Social Innovation Conversation October 2019
On October 21, 2019, three recipients of the Taylor Changemaker Catalyst Award gathered in the Taylor Center classroom to share findings, insights about research methodology, and musings about how social innovation and change-making influences their scholarly work.
Tulane School of Social Work PhD student Andy Melendez Salgado discussed his research on social support networks that form in socially excluded groups, such as among gay men in Cuba, and how it can apply to the field of disaster resilience.

Bethany Beachum spent 5 weeks doing field research for her thesis in Guatemala City where she investigated national-level NGOs and their navigation through the power dynamics between various government levels and international donor organizations. She gave a presentation entitled “Navigating Donors & the State: Power Dynamics in Guatemalan Civil Society.”

Inspired by the lack of quality healthcare for the queer community, Tulane School of Medicine student Shana Zucker developed a pilot program for medical students to create a new generation of culturally competent physicians concerning queer patients through what she’s coined a “Queericulum.”
