As an Academic and Career Advisor at Tulane University, Kayla Smith provides one-on-one advising for over 300 exploratory/liberal arts students, helping them identify their interests, establish academic goals, and navigate their personal and professional journeys.
Before joining Tulane’s staff, Smith taught high school English and creative writing in boarding schools, prep schools, and academic summer programs. She has worked with high school students abroad in Italy and Spain and led college Q&A panels for Duke’s Talent Identification Program and Brown University’s High School Summer Abroad Programs. In addition to advising and teaching, she is also a freelance writer.
Smith is originally from South Mississippi, but she’s spent the past ten years living in Rhode Island, New York, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C. before moving to New Orleans. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Literary Arts and English Literature, with Honors in Literary Arts, from Brown University.
