DiscoveryFEST Enrichment Program is seeking qualified individuals to join our team for Spring 2017 and for the 2016-2017 school year to aid in our mission to bring play, learning, and discovery to New Orleans youth.

About DiscoveryFEST:
DiscoveryFEST aims to provide quality after-school, recess, and summer programs from experienced providers and qualified staff, featuring hands-on activities that build on what students learn in school. DiscoveryFEST is unique as it is not in one specific building or one single program. Rather, it is a network of providers that have made a commitment to introduce students to new worlds of enrichment. Together, DiscoveryFEST aims to facilitate:

  • Inspire youth to live a more active lifestyle
  • Creation of a culture of play within schools and their communities
  • Increase youth social-emotional skills
  • Help youth discover new ideas and opportunities
  • Development of life-long healthy habits
  • Encourage cultural awareness and critical thinking
  • A safe, enriching space for children in the hours when they are most at-risk
  • Engagement of the whole child, including physical activity, social-emotional learning, and health-and-wellness so that all children can explore and develop their own interests

Principal Recess Coach Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning and implementing play and sports based programming during recess, in school, and after school hours at a partnering elementary school.
  • Create a safe and inclusive playground yard during recess time and be a significant presence on the yard by organizing and playing large games with 20+ students as well as role modeling positive behavior
  • Lead and direct DiscoveryFEST Krewe of Play program; a youth leadership program that selects 10-12 students (usually in 3rd, 4th, and/or 5th grades) who provide recess support for younger students throughout the school year. To select this group of leaders, teachers and DiscoveryFEST coaches work together to identify, select, and train selected youth.
  • Lead individual classes in skills building, cooperative games, and activities to increase awareness of rules and boundaries at recess
  • Maintain communication between DiscoveryFEST staff, school staff, teachers, families, and volunteers
  • Collect and maintain paperwork including organizing daily, weekly, and monthly schedules and timesheets
  • Over the course of the school year, create and submit at least 2 learning units with a minimum of 3 lessons each

Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • Instructor should demonstrate deep knowledge, understanding, and technical mastery of games and sport.
  • Enrichment Instructor should possess a genuine desire to share their passions and experiences with young people
  • Demonstrated experience leading groups of children with the ability to engage and inspire youth
  • Experience working with small and large groups of children
  • Motivated self-starter with clear and open communication skills
  • Humorous and playful with ability to set clear goals and follow through with flexible and creative problem solving tools
  • Conceptual ability for the larger perspective with a strong attention to detail and multi-tasking
  • Ability to appropriately address and manage a variety of youth actions and behaviors in a warm, but firm, manner
  • Experience interacting with diverse communities and the ability to integrate into and existing school community
  • Knowledge of computer and internet based programs for use in communication and grant requirements
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to manage assorted tasks with a focus on enhancing the experience for youth during the school day

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Possess a reliable form of transportation and be willing to drive at least 25 minutes to a site.
  • Understand the complexities and challenges of school environments and know how and when to be flexible.
  • Previous experience in working with elementary or middle school students.
  • Associate’s degree or higher

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

DiscoveryFEST has and continues to develop best-practice curricula that encourage discovery-based learning, social-emotional development, and increased academic interests. In addition to being utilized by DiscoveryFEST program staff, these curricula are also able to be used across a variety of locations and scenarios. The current DiscoveryFEST original curricula library includes Superhero League, Imagination University, PlayFEST, Leadership Krewe, Comic Book Playground, Discovery Arcade, and S.T.E.A.M. Galaxy

  • Align current curriculum models to current best practice local and national academic standards
  • Review current curriculum and revamp design and content for instructor facilitation, marketing, and advertising purposes
  • Assist in development of discovery-based curricular opportunities that fit the DiscoveryFEST brand and mission
  • Seek and engage new opportunities to display and utilize DiscoveryFEST original curricula (i.e. afterschool programs, festivals, fairs, summer camps, integrated daytime academic enrichment, etc.)
  • Increase awareness of DiscoveryFEST original curricula to community partners and stakeholders
  • Research other similar curricula, how they are used, how they benefit their parent organizations, etc.
  • Development of curriculum specific surveys to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of DiscoveryFEST’s various curricula
